Prevent Identity Theft With This New Number

The IRS announced Yesterday that all taxpayers will be given the option to receive an Identity Protection PIN, or IP Pin, to help prevent fraudulent returns from being filed with their social security number. There are two ways to request an IP PIN:

  1. Online Tool: you will receive your IP PIN immediately, however, you must pass a “rigorous authentication process.” This will be available in January of 2021
  2. Form 15227: For taxpayers making less than $72,000 in income may request a pin by mail. This form will be available in January of 2021
  3. In Person: If neither of the above options are available to you, you may make an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center

Please note, if you request an IP PIN you will not be able to file a tax return without it. Please make sure to keep it in a safe place and only share it with your tax preparer.

Note: Once you opt in to the IP PIN process you will not be able to opt out of the program until 2022.
